Guinea-Bissau Passport: Visa-Free Countries, Schengen and the US Visa Bond

The passport is the weak side of Guinea-Bissau, and I prefer to say it clearly. The figures below come from the BRIDGES Passport Index as of 4 October 2026, checked against official sources where possible.
The figures
- Rank: 86th of 199 passports.
- Without a prior visa: 50 destinations, of which 29 visa-free, 18 with a visa on arrival and 3 with an electronic travel authorisation.
- eVisa: 47 destinations.
- Visa required: 129 destinations.
The programme page shows a different figure, 44 of 202 destinations. The two BRIDGES pages count differently, and I use the more detailed Passport Index.
West Africa and ECOWAS
Guinea-Bissau is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The BRIDGES Passport Index lists visa-free entry to most ECOWAS neighbours, for example Senegal for 90 days, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone. For Ghana the two BRIDGES pages differ: the programme page says visa-free, the Passport Index shows an electronic travel authorisation. Outside Africa, Singapore is visa-free for 30 days. If your business or family is in West Africa, this is the real value of the passport.
Europe and the UK
Guinea-Bissau is listed in Annex I of EU Regulation 2018/1806, the list of countries whose nationals need a visa to enter the Schengen area. BRIDGES also lists the United Kingdom as visa required. If visa-free Europe is your goal, this passport does not reach it.
The United States and the visa bond
The US Department of State lists Guinea-Bissau among the countries whose nationals are subject to visa bonds, with effect from 1 January 2026. A national of Guinea-Bissau applying for a B1/B2 visa may be required to post a bond, and the consular officer decides on it at the interview. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea also require a visa, according to BRIDGES.

Entering Guinea-Bissau itself
The BRIDGES page on entry to Guinea-Bissau shows that almost all passports can enter without a prior visa: ECOWAS citizens visa-free, most others with a visa on arrival for up to 90 days. Always check the current rules with the consulate before a trip.
Who this passport suits
- people who live or do business in West Africa;
- families looking for a second citizenship at a low entry price, who accept the travel limits;
- people whose current passport opens even fewer doors in Africa.
It does not suit those who need visa-free Europe, the UK or North America. For them, I would look at other programmes. For the overall picture, go back to the complete guide.
